Independent India and Pakistan

1942 - 1974 CE


India gained independence from the British in 1947, but ended up partitioned along religious lines. The mainly-Muslim north became Pakistan, while the predominantly Hindu south became the Republic of India. These two neighbors have had a very uneasy relationship ever since.

1942-1943 - The "Quit India" Movement Blossoms

1948 - Mohandas Gandhi Assassinated by Hindu Radical

1948 - First Indo-Pakistani War over Kashmir

1962 - India Loses Indo-Chinese Border War

1964 - First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru Dies

1965 - Second Indo-Pakistani War

1971 - Third Indo-Pakistani War; Creation of Bangladesh

1974 - First Successful Indian Nuclear Weapons Test
