Tuva

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Tuva: A Russian federal republic in central Siberia, which was at least nominally independent in 1912-1914, and again from 1921 to 1944.

Tuva was controlled at different times throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Mongolia, China and Russia. It was finally annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944.

Tuva issued its own postage stamps in the 1920s and 1930s. These exotic stamps intrigued stamp-collectors including, most famously, physicist Richard Feynman. His story Tuva or Bust! details his attempt to reach the remote republic.

Pronunciation: "TOO-vah"
Also Known As: Tannu Tuva, Tanna Tuva
Examples:

"Throat-singing, in which a single performer sings multiple overtones, is the most famous aspect of Tuva's culture."
