What was a Raj?

By Kallie Szczepanski, About.com

Definition:

Raj: a term which can designate a particular period of Indian history, the area included within the empire at that time, or the government ruling India at that time.

Generally, the word "Raj" refers to the British colonial era/lands/government in India, which lasted from 1858 to 1947. Sometimes it is also used to denote the Mughal Empire, 1526-1858, which preceded the British.

The Mughal Raj was established by the Timurid ruler Babar, a descendant of Genghis Khan and Timur (Tamerlane).

The word raj means "reign" in Hindi; it is used to describe foreign overlords such as the British and the Turkic/Mongol Timurids.

Pronunciation: "rahj"
Examples:

"The British Raj included not just present-day India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, but also Burma (Myanmar)."
