What Is a Lama?

Definition:

"Lama" is a respectful title for a Tibetan Buddhist teacher of the Dharma. The term is also sometimes applied erroneously to any Tibetan Buddhist monk.

The most famous lamas are the reincarnated leaders of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama.

Pronunciation: "LAH-mah"
Examples:

"The great scholar/monk Gendun Drup, who lived from 1391 to 1474, was named the First Dalai Lama after his death."
