What is a Khan?

Definition:

Khan: A ruler of the Mongols, Tartars, or Turkic/Altaic peoples of Central Asia.

The term seems to have originated with the Turkic peoples of the high inner steppes, but spread to Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Persia through the expansion of the Mongols and other tribes.

The term originated as kagan or khagan in the Turkic languages, which means "ruler."

Pronunciation: "kahn"
Also Known As: khagan, kagan, khatun or khanum ("female ruler")
Alternate Spellings: qaan, kan, xan (Chinese)
Examples:

"Many of the great Silk Road oasis towns were ruled by khans during their heyday."
