Definition:

Golden Horde: The group of settled, Turkicized Mongols who ruled over Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova and the Caucasus from the 1240s until 1502. The Golden Horde was established by Batu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan.

The weakening Golden Horde gradually lost control over its different provinces from 1382 on, but did not totally collapse until the beginning of the 16th century.

The Golden Horde's name (Altan Ordu) may have come from the yellow tents used by the rulers, but nobody is sure about the derivation. In any case, the word "horde" entered many European languages through Slavic Eastern Europe as a result of the Golden Horde's rule.

Pronunciation: "GOLE-dun HOR-de"
Also Known As: Altan Ordu (Mongolian), Khanate of the Qipchaq
Examples:

"Tamerlane undermined the power of the Golden Horde, despite his admiration for Genghis Khan."
