Indian troops guard supplies and the bodies of suspected Pakistani militants, 2011

Since its origins in 1947, the Kashmir Conflict has flared periodically. This week, India and Pakistan are once more exchanging more than just words over the mountainous region.

India accuses Pakistan's army of killing two Indian soldiers and mutilating their corpses. One of the soldiers reportedly was beheaded. Pakistan denies the allegation.

The Partition of India at the end of Britain's rule over the subcontinent left many wounds that haven't entirely healed. Kashmir continues to be among the most serious of them.
