BBC recently published a heart-breaking article about the young people who were sent from the cities of China into the countryside as part of the Cultural Revolution. Students as young as middle school were separated from their families, and sent out to work on farms in the distant countryside. Mao Zedong believed that this would instill peasant knowledge and values in the potentially bourgeois city kids.
