Most people have a certain idea of what a harem was like. It may resemble the Hollywood-style harem in this photograph from 1958.
In fact, however, most harems were less alluring and more... well, more like a courtyard. A courtyard in which some women and children lived their ordinary lives. Sorry to disappoint, but there it is!
