US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is visiting the nation of Laos in Southeast Asia - and she is the first top American diplomat to visit the country since John Foster Dulles in 1955. At the time of Dulles's visit, before the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and the French pull-out of Southeast Asia, the US was primarily concerned with supporting France's attempt to keep control of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Today, thankfully, the US has somewhat less reprehensible interests in the region. Secretary Clinton likely will discuss the planned Mekong River Dam, and also the American use of toxic Agent Orange on Laos during the Vietnam War.
